The NextText research area explores new tools and methods related to creative applications of digital text and typography. Our goal is to provide ourselves and others with tools for easily incorporating time-based dynamics, interactivity and data computation into text-based work.

Between Reading & Looking

Creative work exploring the intersection between computational form and meaningful content.

Between Reading & Looking is a series of creative projects which explore how the forms in which digital text is presented can aid and abet the meaningfulness of the text. These projects range from screen-based dynamic poems to large-scale interactive installations.

Cityspeak

Projecting personal voice onto the urban environment.

Cityspeak is ephemeral graffiti, an exploration into the use of private modes of communication to drive transient public displays of commentary about a particular location.

Passage Oublié

What else do we lose when we make people disappear?

Passage Oublié is an interactive touchscreen work that asks users to consider the issue of Extraordinary Rendition. It will be installed in Pearson International Airport, Toronto, from 2 July to 31 December 2007.

Citywide

Citywide provides a hyper-localized chat environment to support geographically co-located micro-communities.

Citywide is a distributed application that enables all the nodes on a free wireless network to create a chat-space that is local to each particular hotspot. Users can employ it to converse with other visitors to the same hotspot, shout out to the cute guy in the corner, post announcements, or explore the history of previously posted messages.

Intralocutor

Materializing speech.

Intralocutor is an interactive installation that allows two participants to play with ways of visualizing their speech.
